Stop the Violence: Get involved!
By Shahn Hayes
Its been only weeks since the beating death of Derrion Alberts of Fenger High School in Chicago, IL. You would think that lessons would be learned about the violence in school and just how far these types of situations escalate.
Derrion Albert, 16-year old honor roll student, who attended Bible Class every week, was beaten to death by a mob of other students and young adults on September 24.
Even still, this week alone there has been a series of violent incidents that have led to double digit numbers in arrest at Vincent High School in Milwaukee, WI.
Tiffany Lee, a fed up parent explains, “I feel that our children are not being heard and are looking for ways to get their point across.” “It takes a village to raise one child and a nation to raise our future,” Tiffany explains.
Tiffany Lee is a good example of an active parent and concerned citizen. This Friday, October 16, 2009, Ms. Lee is holding a STOP The VIOLENCE Dinner Fundraiser (Facebook Invite) to help fund projects and events that will spread more awareness and shed light on this important issue of violence.
A survey was conducted to find out what people would do if they saw a group of teen fighting. Survey concluded that 6 out of 10 people said they would call for help (Security or police); while the other 4 out of 10 people admit that they would try and break up the fight.
Had this been the case and 4 people came to the aid of Derrion Alberts, he may have survived the vicious attacks and lived.
This act of violence MUST not happen again!
“We need a comprehensive peer mediation/conflict resolution program that have input from youth and put them a the center a solutions,” explains Jacqueline Ward, Milwaukee resident.
This Saturday, October 17, 2009, Flood The Hood With Dreams will conduct a Conflict Resolution Training on Self Empowerment that requires input from youth and insight to the many situations our youth face on a daily basis. Facilitated by Campaign Against Violence founders, Muhibb Dyer and Kwabena Nixon. This training is a "must see!"
We Must work together to save our future!
