League Liberates Ballot Arguments from City Hall
(Photo by Luke Thomas, Fog City Journal)
Every year when it's time to do the research for our voters guides we have a hell of a time finding the information we need to understand all the confusing things on the ballot. The Department of Elections boils it down in a voter info booklet with all of the arguments for and against, BUT they don't post 'em online - COME ON!
SO....we had to go down to City Hall during work hours to get a hold of the ballot arguments, man it's a lot of effort to be an engaged participant in Democracy! ...And costly, we found out that If you want to make photocopies of the arguments they cost 10 cents a page!! The ballot arguments can total over 100 pages.
So this year, we took
matters into our own hands. We lugged a printer/scanner down to City
Hall and set up shop. Two hours later, we offer this gift to the San
Francisco political public: the ballot arguments for the 2007 election!*
The people who work at the Department of Elections are smart and friendly. There's no reason they couldn't do this themselves. They just need the leadership. How about it John Arntz (the head of the DoE)? Can we bring San Francisco elections into the 21st century?

* We did leave out a handful of ballot arguments on the more popular measures because we got sick of scanning all of them and they get repetitive after awhile. We apologize if we left out your group's argument. Send it to us and we'll add it.
